THE HIT SQUAD
By WES TUMBLIN
Lima Warriors Media

10/11/04 - LIMA - Do you know what it feels like to be hit by a Mack truck?  If not just ask any ball carrier from a team the Lima Warriors played against this season, because they will tell you it feels exactly like being tackled by one of the Warriors’ linebackers.  The Warriors’ defense has only allowed an average of 6 points per game over a sixteen game span this season with a total of 9 shutouts.  A big reason for success of the defense is the performance of the linebackers this season.  This corps of linebackers is anchored by team captains Davey Settlemire (Liepsic H.S.) and Jason Bott (Elida H.S.).  This is Settlemire’s ninth season playing Semi-Pro football and has been a league All-Star in all but one of those years.  Settlemire is leading the team in forced fumbles and fumble recoveries and is second on defense in total tackles.  Full Story

BOBBY HUTTIS EARNS IRON MAN OF THE WEEK

9/30/04 With the depth the Lima Warriors have on their roster most players don't get the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball during a game.  But Bobby Huttis is the exception to that rule.  Huttis is a starting wide receiver on offense, comes in during nickel and dime packages on defense and plays on special teams. Huttis’ performance last Saturday verse the Ohio Rush has earned him Minor League Football News’ Midwest Iron Man Player of the Week.  Huttis scored the Warriors first two touchdowns with the first score coming on a 1-yard run and then a 22-yard pass reception from Justin Henderson.  Later in the game Huttis intercepted his first pass of the season.

THE BALLHAWKING SQUAD

9/27/04 – Ballhawking!  It is a term preached by Defensive Coordinator Rod Inbody to his entire defensive squad.  And this season there has been a ton of Ballhawking for the Lima Warriors defense.  The defense has forced a team record 52 turnovers, which is an average of almost 4 per game.  Accounting for the biggest share of those takeaways are the Warriors' defensive secondary.  28 of the team's 38 interceptions have been by four players.  Dustin Hunt with 12, Brandt Huttis with 8, Glenn White, Jr. with 5 and Wayne LeGrant with 3 interceptions.  Not only can this secondary pick off passes, they can also punish ball carries.  When a receiver goes across the middle of the field they must be aware of the Warriors' safety, Huttis.  His head rattling hits have made receivers think twice about going after that high pass.  The cornerbacks, Hunt and White, are amongst the team leaders in tackles for the Warriors.

WARRIORS ADD TO COACHING STAFF

9/5/04 – Warriors add Sean Liles, former head coach of the Lima Thunder Semi-Pro football team, to their coaching staff.  Liles, a graduate of Perry High School and resident of Lima, has been the head coach of the Thunder for the past four seasons.  Liles will be assisting on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball for the remainder of the 2004 season.  "He brings a lot of experience to the team," says head coach John Parkins.  "He is a great addition to our already talented coaching staff.  We are glad to have him aboard."  Liles was released by the Thunder management due to some differences between him and the owner.  "It's hard to leave my players with the Thunder," adds Coach Liles.  "But it is time for a change and I'm looking forward to helping the Warriors reach their goal of a championship this season."

KARIZMA TAKES 1ST PLACE

9/4/04 - The Karizma Junior Drill team took first place for their float in the Allen County Fair parade.  Approximately 45 of members of the Karizma Academy assisted in the design and construction of the "Do You Want a Revolution" and "Big House" float.  In addition to winning this parade, Karizma also finished second in the Spencerville Parade earlier in the year.  Congratulations to all the members of the Karizma Academy.  See the Karizma Cheer Squad in action again at the Warriors next home game, September 18th at Ada's War Memorial Stadium.

ANTHONY MIKESELL NAMED MLFN MIDWEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

8/24/04 - Anthony Mikesell's performance verses the Wayne County Wrath last Saturday earned him the Minor League Football News Midwest Defensive Lineman of the Week.  He led the team with 5 solo tackles and 3 assists and was a major factor in containing the Wrath's running attack.   Mikesell, a graduate from Bath High School, is currently leading the Warriors in sacks with 6 and has 19 total tackles on the season.

COLUMBUS MITCHELL NAMED MLFN MIDWEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

8/11/04 - Columbus "Toledo" Mitchell's performance verses the Ohio Storm last Saturday earned him the Minor League Football News Midwest Running Back of the Week.  He rushed for 226-yards on 19-carries and scored 2-touchdowns in the 38-0 win over the Storm.  "I'm honored to be recognized," said Toledo.  "But I couldn't do the things I do without my offensive line, my quarterback and the great receivers we have."  Mitchell currently holds the team record for most rushing yards in a season set in 2003 with 1,486 yards on 287-carries in fifteen games.  He is on pace to shatter his own record in 2004.  In the nine games this season, Mitchell has rushed for 1,149-yards on 164-carries.  He is averaging 7-yards per carry and has scored 6-touchdowns this season.

Q&A WITH BROCK HARTMAN

8/10/04 - Brock Hartman wears many hats for the Lima Warriors' organization.  He is a co-owner of the team, team captain, starting offensive guard, OVFL deputy commissioner, a leader on and off the field.  Most importantly he is a husband, a father of three great children, a Christian and a great friend to a lot of people.  A lot of times people don't see what is going on behind the scenes of the Lima Warriors.  So Brock took a few moments of his time to answer a few questions on the team and the 2004 season.  Full Story

AFA ANNOUNCES "TOP 10" FOR AA LEVEL TEAMS

8/7/04 - The American Football Association has just released its first “Top 10” Ranking of the year for AA level semi-pro teams across the country who play during the national association’s Fall season.  The Top 10, plus an alphabetical listing of ‘Honorable Mention' teams, will be posted every Thursday on the AFA’s American Football News website (www.AmericanFootballNews). The decision to do a ‘national ranking’ for Double A teams comes in part from some of the confusion that arises from the AFA’s weekly ‘power ratings’. All to often semi-pro football enthusiasts confuse the AFA’s weekly ‘power rating’ with a national ‘ranking’ - thinking the number one ‘power rated’ team is actually the AFA’s #1 ranked team.  Full Story

DUSTIN HUNT MIDWEST DEFENSIVE MVP

7/21/04 - The Lima Warriors' defense currently has five straight shutouts and a big reason for their success this season is the outstanding play by Dustin Hunt at right cornerback.  This week he was recognized for his performance by the Minor League Football News.  Hunt was named the Midwest Defensive Most Valuable Player for the week of July 17, 2004.  Hunt's 5 tackles, 2 pass deflections, 1 interception and 1 blocked punt that resulted in a touchdown, helped lead the Warriors' to victory over the Ohio Rush 36-0.  Hunt, a graduate from Bath High School, currently leads the team in interceptions with 6 and holds the team record with 8 consecutive games with an interception going back to last season.  The Semi-Pro record is currently 9 games.  Watch the Warriors in action this Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Ada's War Memorial Stadium when they take on division opponent Ohio Storm and see if Hunt can continue his interception streak.

WHO IS THAT KICKER?

7/20/04 - Who is that player wearing #89?  That is the question you now hear at all the Lima Warriors games.  Well his name is Maciek Szaferski, or "Magic" as his teammates refer to him.  He is the Warriors' place-kicker and punter and is fast becoming the best kicker in the OVFL averaging 45.2 yards per punt and booting 45 yard field goals.  Szaferski was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland and moved to the United States in 1993 for his senior year of high school.  After graduating Williston High School in South Carolina, he was offered a soccer scholarship to the University of South Carolina.  Instead of accepting the scholarship with USC, he decided to attend Sue Bennett College, a small school in London, Kentucky where he could play both soccer and football.  Szaferski transferred to the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana during his Senior year to finish his schooling and to play football for the Cougars.  Full Story

TRIBUTE TO A FALLEN HERO

By Sylvester Jennings

Detroit Seminole News

7/19/04 - Ever so often there comes along a person in your life that really reminds you of, NO ONE. Tony Bell, reminded me of NO ONE and trust me - that was something special. I would imagine that somewhere in god's divine plan Anthony Bell was an angelic operative, sent here to perform a mission or some covert ops. Maybe, just maybe god has his own CIA department, where he sends special people...maybe even angels - here on earth to touch our lives. No - they don't necessarily have to have wings...no they don't have to look angelic with golden locks, holy halo's and a glowing aura's emanating from their body. Work with me, if you will. What if....just what if, they were just common everyday folks? What If they wore a baseball cap...drank and cursed like a sailor, had a few missing teeth, and was built like an NFL tailback? Wouldn't that really be clandestine and deep..deep undercover? To me it is the "ONLY" rational and plausible explanation to explain the life and mission of a one - Tony Bell.  Full Story

LIMA FOOTBALL TEAM FEATURES FOUR FORMER RIDERS

By B.J. Bethel

Sports Writer, The Evening Leader

7/12/04 - Dan Rothe thought his playing days were over.  The 1995 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School had played one year of football at Ashland University, and didn't think he would ever step on a football field again.  Until he stopped at a Shell gas station.  "I went to the Shell station one day and I came across a flyer that the football team had left there," Rothe said. "I didn't even know they existed until that point. I read the flyer and it definitely got my interest."  The team Rothe is referring to is the Lima Warriors, a semi-pro football team. The flyer got Rothe interested enough to where he played for the Warriors this season. The 28 year old is going to be a part owner next year.  "It just kind of fell in my lap," Rothe said. "And I jumped on it."  Rothe is one of four former St. Marys players on the team, which is off to a 3-0 start in the Ohio Valley Football League, a conference that is made up of teams based in the Ohio area.  Full Story

WARRIORS ADD DEPTH TO ROSTER

7/7/04 - In recent weeks the Warriors have added some talent to their roster giving them more depth at a few key positions.

Kevin Argabright, DT, All-Ohio standout for Van Wert High School.

Johnny Alridge, WR, 1996 All-Ohio Selection for Fremont Ross High School and is a 7-time Lakeshore Football League All-star.

Joe Meza, OL, Standout for Lorain High School.

Wayne LeGrant, DB, Standout for Tiffin Columbian High School.

These players will be a great asset to this season's championship run and the Lima Warriors organization welcomes them to the team.

AM I MY BROTHERS KEEPER?

6/30/04 - Two St. Marys brothers are causing havoc for other teams in the Ohio Valley Football League.  Bobby (left) and Brandt (right) Huttis are both graduates and products from the great football tradition of St. Marys High School.  When it is said that these two brothers are giving headaches to the opposing team's coordinators, it's no lie.  Bobby is the Warrior's starting slot receiver and kick returner and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.  Bobby is amongst the team leaders in touchdowns with four in as many games.  Bobby is also a valuable asset on the defensive side of the ball when he steps in next to his brother at safety in certain defensive packages.  Brandt is redefining his position at free safety.  With his outstanding "Ballhawking" abilities and head rattling tackles, Brandt is a force that is hard to deal with in the secondary.  Brandt is currently tied for the team lead in interceptions with four.  "These men are great assets to the Warrior's organization.  They both are highly competitive and play with great emotions and desire" says Head Coach John Parkins when asked about the Bobby and Brandt.  "We look for them to play a valuable role for Warriors for many years to come."

TOWNSEND LEAVING FOR NORTH ALABAMA

6/28/04 - Alphonso "Biggie" Townsend came to the Warriors this past spring to work on his conditioning so he would be ready when he left for camp this summer.  Townsend has commented to the University of North Alabama, a NCAA Division II school to finish his two years of college eligibility.  Townsend a graduate from Lima Senior High School was one of the highest recruited prep players in Ohio.  After High School Townsend went to Fork Union Military Academy then signed and played for the Michigan State Spartans in 2001 and 2002.  Townsend has played four games for the Warriors this season and has recorded 16 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception.  The Warriors organization wishes Biggie the best of luck.

2004 TEAM CAPTAINS SELECTED

5/27/04 - The votes are in.  Davey Settlemire (pictured to the right), Jason Bott, Justin Henderson and Brock Hartman were selected by their teammates as Team Captains for the 2004 season.  This will be Settlemire and Hartman's second season in a row as team captain.  "It is an honor to be selected as team captain for the Warriors.  I'm entering into my tenth season of Semi-Pro Football and what I see on the field this season tops them all.  It is going to be an exciting year and I'm proud to lead the Warriors to victory" says Settlemire.  The Warriors would like to congratulate this year's captains.  They set the example for all to follow.

THE VOICE OF THE WARRIORS

4/26/04 - Ron Burt will be the cable television play-by-play voice for the 2004 Lima Warriors football season.  Ron is a 1972 graduate of Paulding High School.  He has lived in Chicago, Dallas, Nashville and Atlanta.  Ron is the president of "Magic Moment Entertainment" mobile disc jockey service, "Ron Burt Productions" a promotions company that works with Nashville Record Labels and there Artists, and "Northwest Ohio Sports Talk", which is a weekly cable sports talk show carried by a number of local cable networks.  Ron relocated back to Ohio with his daughter Ashley in the fall of 2002.  In April of that year he started hosting "Northwest Ohio Sports Talk"  and he also did color for the GMC basketball on WZOM and for Defiance College on WONW.  This past football season Ron was the radio play-by-play voice for GMC football on 105.7 FM and also for several Defiance College games on 1280 AM.  Ron has also filled in as PA Announcer at a number of area Colleges and Universities during the past year.  In Georgia he worked with the Macon Knights Arena football team in the AFL2.  He was also the voice for the 3-time NAIA National Basketball Champion, Life University Running Eagles.  Ron also worked for several other Colleges and Universities in N. LOCAL MAN KEEPS DREAM ALIVE WITH LIMA WARRIORS

By Sarah Ashley Reid

Staff Writer, Wapak Daily News

2/19/04 - Most 27-year-olds are busy chasing down a career or their own small children, but one Wapakoneta man is chasing those things and more while playing on a semi-pro football team.  Last year Jason Bott led the Lima Warriors in tackling with 105 and in sacks with eight. He also had 10 carries last year for six touchdowns.  Bott, who is originally from Elida, moved to Wapakoneta with his wife Kelly. He is the only Wapak resident playing on the semi-pro team.  "I'd like to change that," the outside lineman said, noting people from Findlay, Fort Wayne and Columbus travel to play football with the team.  Bott started playing football while in high school. He also was a four-year wrestling letterman.  "I played corner actually in high school," he said.  Continuing in football is what lead Bott to be discovered by the team.  "I played flag football since right out of high school and I was noticed by Tracy Rhodes, which used to play for the Findlay Lightning," he said. "He brought the Findlay Lightning to the Lima Thunder."  Now he plays any place his team needs him.  "For the Warriors, I play more than they need me to play," he said. "I played wide receiver, running back, outside linebacker, strong safety, free safety and I am a third string quarterback.  Click here for full article.

Last seasons push to the NFC Championship game. And my favorite personal moment was the 66 yard touchdown catch during the 2002 season against the Michigan Titans."  Devon, who is currently the Warriors Director of Communications, plans on using his time to improve the media relations for the Warriors and is currently busy planning his wedding for this June 26th.  Devon's advice for new players joining the Warriors, "You are part of one of the most dynamic teams in all of semi-pro football, take advantage of every opportunity that you have to excel.  Train hard, play hard, listen to your coaches, and you will make history."
