– LIMA, OH -
Dustin Howard was the play caller for the Warriors’
division foe the Dayton Drive last season. Howard
decided it was time for a change of scenery, so he has
decided to dawn the black and silver and play his home
games at Ada's War Memorial Stadium in 2006.
Howard, who works at Lowe’s in Middletown and lives in
Trenton, Ohio with his fiancé Billie, graduated from
Waverly High School in 2000. The All-State
quarterback had many Division I school offers, but
instead of playing ball after high school he decided
to move to North Carolina for family reasons.
While
in North Carolina he learned of a Semi-Pro football
team called the Jacksonville Raiders of the Mason
Dixon Football League and decided to strap the pads
back on.
During his time with the Raiders, Howard was noticed
by a coach from the Winston-Salem Energy formally of
the National Indoor Football League. The Energy
brought him in to work out with the team and Howard
was able to earn a spot on the roster at the age of
19.
After
only one season with the Raiders, Howard decided to
move back to Ohio so he could be closer to his
family. One evening he was talking to one of his
friends and found out that there was a Semi-Pro team
in Dayton. Still having the passion and the fire to
play he decided to join the Dayton Drive in 2005,
after a 3-year absence from football.
“I
want to play in Lima so I will have a chance to
showcase my talents, because in Lima I will be
surrounded by great coaches and an abundance of
talented athletes,” said Howard.
“Plus
it doesn’t hurt that I will be playing behind that
great offensive line,” added Howard.
The
coaching staff is what I’m impressed with the most
said Howard. Just from what I have seen and know,
they do a great job at getting the players ready to
play.
Howard has decided to play for the Warriors even
without a guaranteed staring position or even playing
time.
Dustin knows he will have to compete for his position
on the field said Head Coach John Parkins. He
understands the team’s philosophy about playing time
and seems to be very excited about the competition.
That
competition would be the Warriors 2005 Offensive MVP
Justin Henderson, who currently holds most of the
team’s passing records and has been the team’s captain
for the past two seasons.
“We
were excited to hear that Dustin was interested in
playing for the Warriors,” said Parkins. “We knew
what kind of talent he had after seeing him play only
once last season. He will be a great addition to our
team.”
“My
goals next season are to help lead the Warriors to a
MLFA championship,” said Howard. “I’m excited to be a
part of the Warriors family and I can’t wait to start
the journey towards the MLFA championship in 2006.”
