Each
season the MLFA awards teams, players and coaches for
outstanding performance and this year three players
and one coach from Lima has earned year end awards.
Only one other team in the MLFA Eastern Conference
received the same amount of awards, the Eastern
Conference champion Grand Rapids Thunder.
Rod
Inbody received the Eastern Conference Defensive
Coordinator of the Year. Inbody guided the league’s
top defense to a league record 13 defensive touchdowns
during the 2005 season. It’s an honor said Inbody. A
coach is only as good as his players and I’m very
fortunate to be surrounded by some great ones.
With
14 interceptions and 5 defensive touchdowns Brandt
Huttis was a shoe in for the Eastern Conference
Defensive Back of the Year. I think this is a great
honor Huttis said. I have to credit a lot of this
award to my teammates, coaches and opposing
quarterbacks, because without them this award would
not have been possible.
“I
would like to thank Rod Inbody for teaching me so much
and Jay Brown for the fun aspect he brought to every
practice and game,” Huttis added. “I would also like
to thank Bobby (Huttis) for always keeping me in line
and making sure I always know when I messed up.”
Davey
Settlemire has another award that he can add to his
overflowing wall of awards from his 10-year career,
because he was named the Eastern Conference Linebacker
of the Year. Settlemire led the Warriors in tackles
and was named the team’s Ultimate Warrior which is the
award given the Warriors’ most valuable player each
year.
Often
an overlooked aspect of defense and a big reason why
Lima’s defense was so dominant was the kicking game.
Maciek Szaferski was named the Eastern Conference
Punter of the Year. Szaferski led the league in
punting average with 43.2 yards per punt in 2005 and
had 12 punts inside the 20 yard line. He also led the
league with fewest punt return yards allowed.
“I
appreciate everyone who watched Semi-Pro football
closely enough to pick their favorite punter,”
Szaferski said. “Usually it’s not a highly talked
about position, so I feel even more recognized because
of that. I am looking forward to putting up better
numbers next year to help my team in the pursuit of
the League Championship.”
