Big plays on both the
offensive and defensive sides of the Lima Warriors
highlighted the second scrimmage held Saturday
afternoon at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
The
Warriors defense stepped up again and produced a
shutout for the second week in a row, which helped the
team roll to a 22-0 win over the Columbus Cowboys.
A
five-yard run by Chris Brooks early in the game set
the tone for what would follow. Later in the
scrimmage, quarterback Justin Henderson threw a
19-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bobby Huttis
who made a diving catch in the end zone.
The
Warriors got many players into the game and were able
to get good looks at them.
Quarterback Justin Henderson led the Warriors (2-0 in
preseason), to three touchdown drives, going 13-for-23
for 221 yards in the scrimmage. Lima scored in three
different possessions, piling up 318-49 advantage in
yards.
Henderson is still struggling with a back injury he
received during a tournament game in January but plans
on recovering soon.
“I am
only playing at about 65 percent right now,” said
Henderson. “I should be 90 to 100 percent by the
first game.”
Running back Columbus Mitchell pounded in a five-yard
touchdown run for the Warriors. Kicker Fred Hallett
followed up by kicking one of his two extra points of
the day during his season debut.
“Our
running game is still looking strong,” said Coach John
Parkins. “The defense also had great intensity today
and I was real happy with that.”
Cornerback Josh Huddleston had a big play on defense
when he sacked the Cowboys quarterback in the end zone
for a safety. The Warriors had three sacks in the
scrimmage as cornerback Dustin Hunt and safety Adam
Forney also nailed the Cowboys quarterback behind the
line of scrimmage.
The
Warriors threw to Bobby Huttis throughout the game as
he had five catches for 133 yards, including a
touchdown reception. Wide receiver Joe Butcher also
contributed two receptions for 56 yards.
Asked
what he thought about the game, cornerback Glenn
White, Jr. said, “We could be better. Once our defense
puts everything together, nobody is going to stop us.
We’ll rule the league again.”
White
had one of the Warriors four interceptions of the
afternoon. Safety Brandt Huttis, linebacker Barry
Peel, and cornerback Michael Hogan also intercepted
the Cowboys quarterback in the scrimmage.
The
weather did not prove to be a factor in the scrimmage.
Although players felt drizzling rain throughout the
game, thunderstorms never materialized.
Lima’s
defense has proven to be a talent mismatch for the
opposition in the first two scrimmages, making it
tough for the Warriors to gauge themselves. They will
open the season June 3rd in Kalamazoo, Michigan,
against the SW Michigan Punishers, hoping that they
have worked out the kinks.
The
Warriors conclude preseason action on Saturday, May
20, against the Columbus Blackhawks at 2:00 P.M. at
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
