5/7/06 – LIMA -
Shoulder pads cracking, helmets colliding and
witnessing pure adrenaline is an experience that only
football can bring.
The Lima
Warriors brought this experience when they opened up
their 2006 season and introduced this year’s team to
their fans with a 30-0 win in a scrimmage against the
West Ohio Wranglers on Saturday.
A crowd of
fans were at Dr. Martin Luther King Park and caught a
glimpse of the latest version of this years Lima
Warriors team that went 11-2 last season and were the
Ohio Valley Division Champions but lost in the MLFA
Conference Finals to end their season.
Justin
Henderson, the Warrior’s quarterback, made the most of
his first scrimmage of the year by throwing two
touchdown passes for over 40 yards including a
47-yarder to Bobby Huttis in leading the Warriors to a
victory.
Huttis led
all receivers with two catches for 60 yards. It was
not a one-man show on the receiving end though as
Porfirio Sutton also made catches and put up big
numbers. Sutton had two catches for 58 yards
including a 42-yard touchdown reception.
Sutton put
on a good show in his opening debut. This is Sutton’s
first season with the Warriors.
Warriors
running backs made a huge impact on the game as they
had a balanced attack and 241 rushing yards as they
sidestepped tacklers and ran over defenders all day.
Running
backs Chris Brooks and Columbus Mitchell both had 60
yard rushing days to lead the Warriors. Running back
Calvin Brown had six carries for 22 yards and a
touchdown and Mark Strahm pounded the ball in for a
touchdown at the goal line to round out the Warriors
scoring.
“I was
impressed with the running backs as a whole,” coach
John Parkins said. “All six of them really stepped up
and if the running backs are playing well that means
the offensive line is doing well.”
The
Warriors’ defense also did a tremendous job as they
bottled up the Wranglers running game and put pressure
on their QB all game.
Posting
shutouts are not new to this Warriors defense as they
had six such games during last season. The Warriors
had the top defense in the league during the 2005
season as they only allowed 13 touchdowns all of last
year.
“We got a
lot of players in the game, got a good look at
everybody and I was very happy with what I saw today,”
Parkins said.
Many amateur
football clubs might have unknown players but the
Warriors had seven first team MLFA all-league
selections last season.
The Warriors
also have such big names as DT Alphonso “Biggie”
Townsend who played for Michigan State University, P/PK
Maciek Szaferski who played for the Dallas Cowboys and
OLB Jason Bott who signed a pro contract with the
Miami Valley Silverbacks of the American Indoor
Football League and the Dayton Bulldogs of the NIFL.
The Warriors are in action again Saturday, May 13th at
2:00 PM against the Columbus Cowboys for the team’s
second scrimmage of the year at Dr. Martin Luther King
Park.
