- Many coaches want their players to strive for
perfection.
Maybe that was why several Lima Warriors football
players stayed after their 68-0 shellacking of the
West Ohio Wranglers on Saturday to do some extra
push-ups.
The Warriors (2-0) completely dominated the game on
both sides of the ball en route to their second
consecutive victory to start the season.
Warriors head coach John Parkins said it was a
total team performance.
“It was an awesome performance, all the way across
the board,” Parkins said. “Look out here — they’re not
done. The coaches make them do push-ups because of
mistakes. We don’t settle for anything less.”
On offense, the Warriors rolled up 453 total yards
(364 rushing, 89 passing) and recorded 19 first downs.
On defense, the Warriors stymied the Wrangler
offense, holding it to seven yards of total offense.
Elida product Jeremy Bott led the Warrior offense
with four touchdowns. Bott rushed for 88 yards and two
TDs and caught two passes for the other two scores.
His twin brother, Jason, played a linebacker position
for the Warriors defense.
“Jeremy Bott had a great performance,” Parkins
said. “The offensive line opened up some huge holes.
On defense, they ball-hawked, they’re relentless. I
would hate to play against our defense.”
West Ohio’s offense struggled the entire game.
Quarterback Brandon Meyer completed 3 of 11 passes for
just seven yards. Meyer was sacked three times and was
hurried on several of his pass attempts.
Davey Settlemire, a Warrior linebacker from
Leipsic, said the defensive unit came together and
dominated the West Ohio offense.
“This is great; this is the way I like to play,”
Settlemire said. “We go in and shut them down and get
the second group of guys in there to play. We have so
much talent on our defense; it’s so loaded. Our second
group of guys are as good as the first group, but they
don’t get to show it all the time.”
Jeremy Bott said he knew he had to step it up when
his number was called.
“Mr. Parkins gave me the opportunity and I took
advantage of the situation,” Bott said. “With four
great backs, you only get a limited time on the field.
Any four of the backs can score, so I had to take
advantage of it.”
