The
Lima Warriors have never lost a regular season game in
the month of June.
The
(2-0) Warriors will keep this is mind when they face
the (1-1) Ohio Knights this Saturday, June 17, in Ada
at 7:05 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
The
Warriors stand at the top of the division as the lone
undefeated team as they open up divisional play.
The
battle won't be easy, but the Knights are going on the
road for the first time against a tough Warriors team,
eager to get its third win in front of a rowdy home
crowd. The Knights were etched out 26-14 in their
first game against the Motor City Warthogs.
Last Saturday the Knights won their second game in a
16-0 shutout against the Ft. Wayne Flyers in
divisional play. A win this week will give the
Knights a share of the lead of the Ohio Valley
Division.
The
Knights are led by running backs Krishaun Gilmore and
Josh Schwochow. Last week Gilmore had 18 carries for
80 yards and Schwochow had 11 carries for 65 yards.
Tight End Jamar Reid also had a fine performance
against Ft. Wayne with six receptions for 60 yards.
Knight’s quarterback Joe Broadway has also thrown for
over 200 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions
this season.
Fans should be ready for a playoff-type atmosphere as
the two teams meet for the first time.
The
Warriors are coming off a 68-0 win against the West
Ohio Wranglers.
Lima’s defense has shutout opponents the last 16 of 31
games.
“The defense steps up when they have to,” said coach
John Parkins. “I would not be surprised if the streak
ends up around 22 out of 37 games.”
The
Warriors now have not allowed a point in three
preseason and two regular season games in 2006.
The
defense has only allowed 35 passing yards by opponents
in two games and has many outstanding performers,
including Davey Settlemire, who was named Fat Jack’s
Pizza defender of the game last week by his tenacious
performance. Settlemire had four and a half tackles
and a fumble recovery against the Wranglers.
If
the game comes down to the special teams,
Lima has the advantage. The Knights are averaging
only 9 yards per kickoff return. Despite minimal
touches, kick returners Jason Bott and Wayne Legrant
are averaging 25 yards per return.
The
human highlight reel Joe Butcher has done a fine job
returning punts for the Warriors. He has accumulated
91 yards returning punts this season, including a
52-yard touchdown return last week.
To
round off special team’s play are kickers Fred Hallett
and Randy Ryan. The duo has added 11 points this
season on extra point attempts.
The
Warriors know they will face possibly their toughest
competition this year in the Knights and will be ready
for the game.
“We
need to compete harder and continue to put points
on the board,” said wide receiver Porfilio Sutton.
The
game will be brought to you by
Cycle Sport Center and X107.5. People in
attendance will also have the chance to take part in
activities throughout the game, including the Superior
Federal Credit Union Runback for Cash, where one lucky
fan could win $100 and the Home Depot Touchdown Toss
contest.
Bring a non-perishable food item and receive $1.00 off
admission. Ticket proceeds will be donated to the
West Ohio Food Bank. There were about 400 in
attendance last week and this week an even bigger
attendance is expected for the big game.
