It's
hard to tell how good the Lima Warriors are this early
in the season, but they are not surprised with their
successful start.
After
missing the first two games, Bobby Huttis had three
receptions for 47 yards and scored two touchdowns,
including a 33-yard catch in the fourth quarter in
Lima’s 32-6 victory over the Ohio Knights at War
Memorial Stadium.
“Once
you get on the field, everything comes back and it’s
all natural,” said Huttis.
The
(3-0) Warriors now have won their first three games in
the last four seasons.
Warriors quarterback Justin Henderson wasn’t perfect,
but had a gutsy performance --completing five of
eleven passes for 79 yards, two touchdowns and an
interception.
“Justin bleeds Warriors blood and really stepped up,”
said coach John Parkins.
The
Warriors played excellent defense against a team that
scored 16 points last week. The Knights (1-2) had
just 195 total yards and turned the ball over four
times.
“Everybody steps up when they come to play Lima,” said
running back Chris Brooks. “When they leave, they
realized who they played.”
Brooks carried six times for 51 yards, including a
three-yard touchdown run to put the Warriors on the
board with 5:56 in the first quarter.
Knights quarterback Joe Freeman was pressured all day
by co-defensive players of the game Eric Siefker and
Alphonso “Biggie” Townsend. Freeman was 7-of-21 for
123 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
Freeman’s frustrations were visible in the fourth
quarter as the last of the seven sacks by the Warriors
defense was handed to him.
The
Warriors gave up their first points of the season on a
48-yard pass by Freeman to Travis Haywood with 29
seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game.
Haywood had a good performance with three receptions
for 80 yards.
After
that play, the Knights could not get in sync and did
not score again.
“When
we gave up a score, nobody got mad at one another and
we didn’t look back,” said Huttis.
The
game was tied until early in the second quarter when
Huttis slipped behind the secondary for a 15-yard
reception.
“If
we had enough time to throw it, we could have scored
on every pass play,” said Huttis.
Columbus “Toledo”
Mitchell burst up the middle for a four-yard touchdown
run to give the Warriors a 18-6 lead going into
halftime. Mitchell finished with 10 carries for 75
yards.
It
was all defense for both teams in the third quarter as
nobody scored. Lima’s defense was led by Siefker, who
accumulated nine tackles and two and a half sacks and
Townsend who ended with five tackles and two sacks.
Leading by 12, Henderson drove the Warriors down the
field--finishing with a 33-yard touchdown pass to
Huttis in traffic that extended the lead to 25-6 with
4:42 left.
As
the game wore on, the Warriors wore down the Knights
and proved that they have the best defense in the
league.
After
holding the knights to three-and-out, Troy Williamson
recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for a
touchdown to close the scoring for the Warriors.
Kicker Fred Hallett was good on the extra point
attempt for his second of the game.
Other
key defensive plays were made by Davey Settlemire with
one and a half sacks and Issac Melton with a sack.
Josh Huddleston, Glenn White and Jason Bott also had
an interception in the game.
The
Warriors walk away with confidence.
“I
really believe there is no team in Ohio that can beat
us,” said Melton. “Even after giving up a score in the
first quarter, we stuck together and got a big win for
us.”
The
fan attendance increased from last week at War
Memorial Stadium and the Warriors are next in action
June, 24 at 7:00 p.m. against the Ft. Wayne Flyers at
Dave S. Walter Memorial Stadium.
