Two
teams enter Saturday’s match up with post-season plans
on the line.
The
Macomb Country Strength (1-2) come to War Memorial
Stadium to take on the Lima Warriors (4-0) in a game
that is important in the playoff futures for both
teams.
“I
would call it a game that will get us back on track,”
said coach John Parkins. “We know we are good and we
expect to be 5-0 now.”
A win
for the Warriors would almost seal a spot in the
playoffs, while a win for the Strength would even
their record and provide huge confidence for their
playoff run.
The
Strength are coming off a 41-16 loss to the Grand
Rapids Thunder.
A 6-6
record last season for the Strength and a first-round
loss in the playoffs has brought dedication to this
year’s team. The Strength claims to have practiced
since December which makes many wonder whether the
team is burnt out.
The
passing attack has been used by the Strength a lot
this season. They are led by quarterback Brian Young,
who threw eight touchdown passes the first two games
of this season. Young threw for 12 touchdowns last
season for 629 yards.
When
asked what the Warriors defense needs to do to stop
the Strength’s passing attack, Parkins replied,
“Pressure the quarterback and that will force
interceptions.”
The
Strength have leadership in many areas including tight
end Casey Koss, offensive tackle Jon Arnold, defensive
lineman Jay Vamvas, linebacker Lenny Jakaj, defensive
back Paul Molinik, running back DeShannon Munlin and
wide receiver Brent LeVasseur, whom were all named to
Eastern Conference MLFA first through third team
honors.
The
Warriors are coming off of a close 7-6 victory over
the Ft. Wayne Flyers. If the Strength’s defense gives
up their average of 38 points per game, the Warrior’s
offense will get back on track.
“We
need to put together an all around perfect game, which
we have failed to do thus far this season,” said
Parkins.
If
the Strength’s defense gives up 500 yards of offense
as they did last game, the Warriors offense will have
a heyday.
The
Warriors average 228 yards of rushing per game and
have rushed for 910 yards in their first four games.
Columbus “Toledo” Mitchell, Chris Brooks and Jeremy
Bott have scored nine rushing touchdowns this season
for the Warriors.
The
defense of the Warriors has allowed only 12 total
points this season and looks to continue the trend of
dominating offenses. Alphonso “Biggie” Townsend, Troy
Williamson and Eric Siefker have combined for 10 sacks
this season and will pressure Young to throw
interceptions.
Six
different Warriors players have already picked off
quarterbacks this season and will all be waiting on a
poor throw.
“We
need to start playing perfect because it is not going
to be easy down the stretch,” said Parkins.
The
game will take place Saturday, July 8 and kickoff is
scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at War Memorial Stadium in Ada.
The
game will be sponsored by Ray’s Place and X-107.5 on
Ladies Night for the Warriors. $1.00 from each ticket
will also be donated to Safe Harbor runaway shelter.
This
is the first ever match up between the two squads and
has the makings of a great game.
“The
defense will step up and the fans will see a hungry
Warriors team on the field this weekend,” said
Parkins.
