MIDDLEFIELD - The #3 MLFA power ranked Lima
Warriors (9-1) completed their amazing regular season
with a 35-17 win over the Eastlake Vikings.
The win this
Saturday over the first year team extended the
Warriors’ winning streak to four games. The Warriors
now have the MLFA playoffs on their minds.
Playing
against a hard-nosed team and a possible future rival,
Lima took the game into their own hands from the
initial kick off.
The Warriors
jumped out to a 12 –0 lead in the first quarter after
scores from Chris Brooks and Andrew Cleckley. Brooks
scored on a 71-yard run up the middle and was
virtually untouched to the end zone early in the first
quarter.
Wide
receiver Bobby Huttis led the blocking down field.
“Those were
some great blocks downfield field to help Brooks into
the endzone on that first long carry,” said Coach John
Parkins.
Running back
Andrew Cleckley extended the Warriors lead to 12-0
after he pounded in the ball at the red zone for a TD.
The Vikings
closed the lead after quarterback Jason Reed hit a
receiver in the corner of the end zone for a
touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the
score was 12-6.
It may have
been a battle of talent versus experience on Saturday,
but the Warriors have both and played a well-balanced
game.
Turnovers
proved costly for the Warriors, when a Viking
interception led to a 35-yard field goal in the second
quarter to draw closer at 12-9.
The Warriors
drove the field with time running down in the second
quarter. Kicker Randy Ryan nailed a 30-yard field
goal to give the Warriors a 15-9 halftime lead.
The Warriors
went on to score 20 more points in the second half
with scores from wide receiver Porfirio Sutton,
quarterback Kaene Runion and Brooks earned his second
TD of the game.
Sutton
tallied a 10-yard touchdown catch from Runion early in
the third quarter and Runion notched a 44-yard
touchdown run as the third quarter was coming to and
end.
Although
Eastlake would get an eight-yard touchdown reception
from wide receiver Arthur McDaniel with 2:25 left in
the third quarter, the Warriors defense proved to be
too much for the Eastlake offense attack.
Brooks
finished off the scoring with a five-yard touchdown
and his second touchdown of the game. Brooks plunged
over the middle of the line and capped off a 67-yard
drive.
Numerous
players played different positions than normal and the
offensive line led by Brock Hartman gave a lot of time
for Runion to find receivers all game.
On the day
for the Warriors, quarterback Runion threw for one
touchdown and ran for one touchdown to lead the
offense.
Cornerback
Dustin Hunt and linebacker Troy Williamson each had
one sack on the Viking’s, while Hunt and Wayne Legrant
intercepted Reed.
“I knew that
if the offense played with consistency and the defense
would do what they do, we’d be fine,” said wide
receiver Joe Butcher. “We came off slow and in the
second half we played Warrior ball.”
The
Warriors now have their sights on the Motor City
Warthogs. The Warriors play a first-round playoff
game against the Warthogs at War Memorial Stadium on
Saturday, 19 at 7:05 P.M.
