The
Lima Warriors look to improve to 8-1 on the season
when they entertain the Fort Wayne Flyers (3-5) on
August 5.
The match up
will be the last home game of the regular season. The
Warriors’ fans will still be able to see their beloved
team at home as the Warriors have already earned a
home game in the first round of the playoffs.
Fort Wayne fell
to the Macomb County Strength 12-13 last week in a
heartbreaker. A missed two-point conversion was the
end to a miserable day for the team. Twenty out of
sixty of the Flyers’ players showed up for the game
played at temperatures in the 100s.
Lima, however
did not have roster problems in their thrilling 16-15
win over the Motor City Warthogs last Saturday.
The two division
rivals faced each other June 24 at War Memorial
Stadium for a game originally scheduled in Fort Wayne.
The change of venues was made due to a field
discrepancy on Ft. Wayne’s home field. The outcome was
a 7-6 Warrior’s victory over the Flyers.
"If we don’t
come out with our top performance, it’s going to be a
struggle again," said running back Jeremy Bott. "They
are going to come out fired up."
Warriors’
running back, Columbus "Toledo" Mitchell played with
the Flyers last season and will be extra hyped-up for
the game.
Mitchell ran for
65 yards and one touchdown in the teams’ first meeting
this season.
The Warriors
defense had a solid performance by not allowing the
Flyers to enter the end zone. The only Flyers points
came on two, long field goals by kicker Brian Clawson,
who was reportedly hurt two weeks ago .
Four different
players for the Warriors had sacks on Fort Wayne’s
quarterback in the prior meeting.
"It’s a big
rivalry and Fort Wayne is always tough," said kicker
Randy Ryan.
The Warriors
look to take a three game advantage in the series with
a win on Saturday.
Quarterback
Kaene Runion makes his second start of the season this
week. Runion will look to improve on his solid
performance last week, where he threw 6 for 14, 141
yards, including two touchdowns and ran for 41 yards.
The Warriors
already have clinched the Ohio Valley Division for the
third straight season, but the Flyers have plans to
spoil any celebration by Lima.
The first
meeting between the two squads brought one of the
largest crowds to War Memorial Stadium this year. The
energy around the community shows signs of an even
larger crowd for the Warriors final home game of the
regular season.
"We need to be
consistent out there," said wide receiver Joe Butcher.
"If we do that we’ll be fine."
This week’s
special event will be Youth Football Night. All youth
football players are invited to come for instruction
from Warriors’ coaches and players at 4:00 p.m.
"I love the
things this team does for the community," said
defensive end Adam Gill. "I’m proud to be a Warrior."
Saturday’s game is brought to
you by Lima Sporting Goods and X-107.5. $1.00 from
each ticket sold will be donated to the Salvation
Army. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
