- The Lima Warriors fans witnessed another exciting
game against the Fort Wayne Flyers. Once again, the
Warriors were victorious.
Quarterback Kaene Runion had another solid performance
in his second start, throwing for 94 yards, one
touchdown and ran for a touchdown to lead Lima’s 33-12
rout of the Fort Wayne Flyers.
The Warriors
improve their record to 8-1 while taking a five-game
lead over second-place Fort Wayne (3-6) in the Ohio
Valley Division.
Porfirio
Sutton caught a career- high three passes for 57 yards
and Randy Ryan kicked three extra points in Lima’s
third straight victory.
Runion got
the Warriors on the board first with a one-yard
touchdown run at 9:46 in the first quarter.
A record
breaking performance and huge plays highlighted
Saturday’s game. Joe Butcher returned a punt 75 yards
for a touchdown with 5:45 left in the first quarter.
His score was part of a 14-point first-quarter
outburst by the Warriors.
Butcher also
had a punt return for a TD in Lima’s 68-0 victory
against the West Ohio Wranglers on June 10.
“I went to
take a right and I heard the coach in the back of my
head saying ‘take a left’,” said Butcher. Once I cut
left, the wall was there and I just set it in cruise
control and followed my blockers.”
Former Lima
receiver Michael Woods helped the Flyers regroup and
caught two passes for 23 yards, including a nine-yard
touchdown reception with 2:10 left in the first
quarter. Woods played his last football game and the
Warriors honored him afterwards for the time he spent
with their organization.
Early in the
second quarter, the Flyers were looking to score and
the Warriors’ defense had their back to the wall, when
Yansey Donald picked off a pass and returned the
interception 100-yards for a touchdown and a team
record.
“That was a
big interception by Yansey and it gave us some more
breathing room,” said Coach John Parkins.
Donald was
named defensive player of the game.
“When I came
here I wanted to be part of the Lima Warriors and it
feels great,” said Donald. “I’m just going to take
this one step at a time and be humble with it.”
Flyers
quarterback Eric Adam ran for a one-yard touchdown at
7:23 in the second quarter to narrow the lead.
That was the first rushing touchdown the
Warriors allowed this season.
Chris Brooks
pounded the ball in at the goal line at 1:04 to put
the Warriors up 27-12 at halftime. Brooks ran for his
fourth touchdown of the season and led the Warriors
with 51 yards rushing.
Sutton
closed out the scoring when Runion connected with him
for a 31-yard TD pass with 1:52 left in the third
quarter. Sutton was named offensive player of the
game.
“I just want
to thank the coaches for giving me an opportunity to
start,” said Sutton. “I had to prove myself and today
I felt like it was the time.”
Jason Bott
and Troy Williamson each had fumble recoveries for the
defense. Bott led the team with six tackles and Adam
Gill had one sack.
The Warriors
felt this game was a better performance than earlier
in the season when Lima squeaked out a 7-6 victory
over the Flyers.
“We were
more in sync out there today,” said Butcher.
“The
guys had a little more spirit and fire under them,”
said Parkins. “Whenever we play the Flyers it’s a
tough battle. The guys stepped it up and played
better this week.”
Warriors
close out the regular season when they travel to play
the (1-3) Eastlake Vikings Saturday, August 12 at 7:00
p.m.
