Ringing in the NFL preseason and concluding the Lima
Warriors’ sixth regular season, football fanatics are
excited.
The Eastlake Vikings, 1-3, host the Lima Warriors, 8-1, on
Saturday, August 12. Kickoff at
Cardinal High School is 7:00 p.m.
The Warriors and the Vikings have never contested each other
and both teams badly want the win.
Lima
reaches Saturday’s game coming off a 33-12 victory
last Saturday against Fort Wayne.
Eastlake took a 13-6 non-league victory over the Ohio Storm on July
29.
The Vikings are a first-year squad yet has almost 40 players
listed on the roster.
Lima
owns triumphs in 28 of its last 32 regular-season
games. A win would give the Warriors their fifth
9+-victory season in franchise history. A win this
week and a first-round playoff victory would also earn
John Parkins his fourth double-digit seasonal victory
total in four years as a head coach. The Warriors
have won division titles the last three years and hope
to take that success into the playoffs.
Wide Receiver Joe Butcher understands what it takes for the
team to succeed.
“We’ve got good players and athletes,” said Butcher. “If we
can just stay consistent, we’ll be fine.”
The Warriors will not overlook anybody in anticipation of the
upcoming playoffs.
“We need to improve on everything,” said Coach John Parkins.
“Any time we travel a long distance like
Cleveland,
it makes it rough. We’re going to come out and do
what we need to do.
When asked whether or not this is an opportunity to get a lot
of personnel in the game Parkins said, “If the score
dictates it, we’ll get more players in.”
The Warriors have already earned a home playoff game on
August 19, but would love to finish off the season
with a victory.
Lima’s
defense is only allowing six points a game and looks
for their third shutout of the season. Linebacker
Troy Williamson leads the defense with 39.5 tackles
this season. Four different players are tied with two
interceptions a piece. Yansey Donald, Jason Bott,
Dustin Hunt and Glenn White look to add on to their
total this Saturday.
Donald had a game saving interception against the Motor City
Warthogs and a record-breaking 99-yard interception
return for a touchdown last week versus the Fort Wayne
Flyers.
Alphonso “Biggie” Townsend and Troy Williamson each have four
sacks and along with Eric Siefker, Adam Gill and
others will pressure the Vikings quarterback all game.
The Warriors offense came alive last week with 33 points
after they struggled to score the two previous games.
Jeremy Bott and Joe Butcher lead the team with seven
touchdowns a piece.
Chris Brooks now leads the team in rushing yards with 418
yards. Brooks runs over defenses and averages almost
eight yards per carry. Brooks has four touchdowns in
54 attempts.
Quarterback Kaene Runion starts his third game this season.
Runion has proved to be versatile in the air and on
the ground. He has thrown for 332 yards and
responsible for four Warriors’ touchdowns.
